Band Members: Frida Öhrn - vocal
Oh Laura, formerly known as Laura, is an indie pop group from capitol of Sweden. The band's name comes from one of the heroines of the television series Twin Peaks (director Stephen Lunch), Laura Palmer. Oh Laura’’ started out as a song writing project between old university friends, Jocke and Jörge. Jocke is the harmonies and melodies man in the partnership, while Jörgen is the lyricist. It was when Jocke was taken to a concert by his sister, and he saw and heard Frida for the first time, that their project moved on. So impressed was Jocke by Frida’’s voice that he tracked her down and approached her to form a band with him and Jörgen. “It's all about Frida's voice, really. It's why we started and it's why we keep going. And it's most likely the reason why you're here.” Says Jörgen Kjellgren, founding member, guitarist and co-songwriter of Oh Laura. Not long thereafter, Frida’’s friends Rikard and Magnus joined to complete the setup on bass and drums respectively. The band started playing live, quickly building a loyal following and catching the attention of Swedish production duo, MixInc, who in turn introduced them to Stockholm based indie label Cosmos Records. Oh Laura then spent the summer of 2006 recording their debut album, ‘‘A Song Inside My Head, A Demon In My Bed’’. The record released on 25th May 2007 under the independent label Cosmos Records. The first single off the record is "Release Me" and has appeared in a Saab commercial aired in Sweden, Norway, Poland, Spain, New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, France and the United Kingdom. "Release Me", peaked at #2 on Swedish music charts and the album covered with gold and wasn't leaving the local TOP 5 within a long time. When asked to describe the album, Jörgen says “the kind that works well late on a rainy night, listened to with whisky.”. Musically, ‘‘A Song Inside My Head, A Demon In My Bed’’, is influenced by both pop and country, drawing on artists/ bands as diverse as Richard Hawley through Elvis to Dolly Parton. Lyrically the album explores the universal theme of love, but not in a conventional or obvious way, but rather by poking at it from its underbelly. “It is a love story.”, says Frida, “But not a happy love story. Its something a little bit uncomfortable, something that doesn’’t stick together completely.”. It is exactly this ‘‘uncomfortableness’’, the jarring of dark and light, in this bittersweet collection of songs, that makes them so real, so beautiful, and so haunting, particularly when sung by that voice.
Who is an owner of this amazing voice? The vocalist is borned in Stockholm, 28 years old Frida Ohrn. Her mother, a teacher, and her father, a chiropractor, divorced when she was very young, so she was raised for the most part by her mother. Music was key to Frida's life from a very early age, “we sang a lot when I was little, my mother sang a lot, and my father taught me how to play the guitar, and he showed me all kinds of music, Elvis and The Beatles and honky-tonk music.". Outside of music, Frida's passion as a child was dancing – classical ballet, tap dancing, oriental dancing, and figure skating, which she competed in professionally until the age of 15. "So I always had that love to be onstage, to communicate with people from the stage. I like having attention. I am one of those..." Frida's first job after school was as a singer come waitress at her local (she sang around eight numbers with the house band in between serving courses). After that she paid the rent by singing for a number of various Sweden based bands. Two of which, she still works with now: Cookies and Beans, a country band with two other girls "who play harmonica and guitar and sing"; and Reimers Orchestra, a jazz band whose members, ex her, are all "very old men, over 70”. Outside of this, Frida doing the Swedish voice over for the character Susie on Nickelodeon cartoon. She claim that: "My first focus is Oh Laura. When we come together it's a very special feeling, like you are almost one person doing it together, in sync, on the same track."
